Name Recognition

June 1

Why it’s important:
Recognizing their name is one of the first academic skills children use in kindergarten. It helps them find their belongings, identify their work, and begin connecting letters to meaning. This skill also builds early literacy confidence.

How to do it:
Write your child’s name clearly and show it to them often. Point it out on drawings, labels, and personal items. Play games like “Find Your Name” by placing it among other names or words.

What to look for:

  • Recognizes their name in print
  • Points to it when asked
  • Begins to distinguish it from other words
