Countdown to Kindergarten

We are excited to share this Countdown to Kindergarten calendar with you and your child! Starting kindergarten is an exciting milestone, and this calendar is designed to help your child build confidence and skills in a fun, simple way.  Countdown to Kindergarten is a fun, easy-to-follow daily guide designed to help children build the skills they need to feel confident and ready for kindergarten. From April 1 through August 15, families practice one small skill each day—focusing on independence, social-emotional growth, early learning, and school routines. By breaking readiness into simple, playful steps, this countdown supports children’s growth while keeping preparation positive, developmentally appropriate, and stress-free for both kids and caregivers.

What Does Kindergarten Readiness Look Like?
Children enter kindergarten with a range of skills, and that’s okay! In general, children are developing the ability to:

  • Communicate their needs and follow simple directions
  • Play and interact with other children
  • Show independence (e.g., washing hands, putting on a jacket, cleaning up)
  • Recognize some letters, numbers, colors, and shapes
  • Try new things and manage big feelings with support

How to Use the Calendar:

  • Click on each date or activity name below (in table or on the calendar) to view more details.
  • Complete one activity at home each day leading up to the first day of kindergarten.
  • Keep it flexible—if you can’t do an activity, simply continue the next day.
  • Use the activities as a guide—feel free to adapt, repeat favorites, or extend learning through play.
  • Talk with your child during activities—conversation builds language and confidence.

Kindergarten readiness is not about perfection—it’s about helping your child feel confident, curious, and ready to learn!
